Rewiring

In Ontario, to comply with modern Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) codes,

several outdated types of wiring should be replaced to ensure safety, reliability,

and compliance with current regulations. Below are some common types of wiring

that may need replacing, along with the approximate years of installation:

Knob & Tub Wiring

Cloth Braided Wiring

Cloth Braided Wiring

Knob and tube wiring

  • Installation Period: 1880s to 1940s
  • Description: Knob and tube wiring is an outdated electrical system that uses bare copper wires that run through porcelain knobs and tubes. While it was once the standard, it lacks grounding and is not suitable for modern electrical demands.
  • Why Replace: It is not grounded, is prone to insulation damage, and has limited circuit capacity. It also does not meet modern safety standards and could lead to electrical hazards.

  • Installation Period: 1920s to 1970s
  • Description: Cloth-braided wiring was used before the widespread adoption of plastic insulation. The wire itself is copper, but it is wrapped in a cloth coating for insulation.
  • Why Replace: The cloth insulation can degrade and become brittle over time, exposing the wires and increasing the risk of electrical fires and shocks.

Old Ungrounded(2-prong) Wiring

  • Installation Period: 1940s to 1970s
  • Description: Older homes may have two-prong outlets powered by ungrounded wiring, meaning they lack the safety benefits of a ground wire.
  • Why Replace: These systems are incompatible with modern three-prong outlets, which are needed for many modern appliances and offer more protection against electrical shocks.

Aluminum Wiring

Aluminum wiring

  • Installation Period: 1960s to 1970s
  • Description: Aluminum wiring was once used as a cost-saving alternative to copper wire. However, it is more prone to oxidation and can become loose over time, creating a fire hazard.
  • Why Replace: Aluminum wiring is more prone to overheating and poor connections, which increase the risk of electrical fires. The use of aluminum wire is generally discouraged in modern installations unless it is properly updated with special connectors.

Why is Replacing Outdated Wiring Important?

Outdated wiring can cause risks like electrical shock, fires and overloads.

Upgrading to grounded copper wiring ensures your home meets ESA codes,

provides a safer more reliable electrical system and prevents insurance issues.
